Jana Novák (female surname newly)

Until recently, it was opossible to register a female surname without suffixation (i.e. in the masculine form)  only in exceptional situations. However, this is now changed by an amendment to the Register of Birth, Marriages and Deaths  Act. Since the beginning of 2022, the right to register a surname without suffixation is no longer subject to any condition. It is sufficient to apply for the registration at the Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths without offering any justification.

Therefore, even when a marriage or registered partnership is entered into, it will be now possible to register a surname in the male form on a woman’s request. Until now, this has been possible only for women - foreign nationals and Czech citizens of a non-Czech citizenship because of their residence abroad or because their spouse or partner in a registered partnership is a foreigner.

When registering the birth of a girl, it is possible to register her surname without suffixation upon request of the parents. If one of the parents is unknown, the consent of one parent is sufficient as before.
